INMIGRACIÓN

Racismo, no. Sentido común

Canarias Noticias - 16/10/2020

Racism, no. Common sense

The migratory crisis that the Canary Islands are going through at the moment, is putting all the institutions of the islands to the test. For example, this past Friday 312 immigrants have arrived in Gran Canaria, Tenerife, and Fuerteventura.

The State does not seem inclined to take serious measures against the governments of Morocco and Mauritania, and it does not seem to be very interested in the tremendous cost that it is assuming, not only for the Canary Islands, but also for the people who arrive in boats or canoes to our islands, this situation.

It is not easy to find accommodation, in such a short space of time, for almost six thousand people who have arrived in just two months on the islands, without the institutions being newly established.

We know, as all Canaries know, that there are multiple buildings, of different institutions, which could properly shelter the immigrants that the mafias bring to our shores with the approval of corrupt governments like the Moroccan.

There are multiple military installations that could be fitted out to shelter the tremendous number of immigrants that we are receiving, and that the State is not transferring to mainland Spain. Incomprehensibly, the Ministry of Defense has refused to provide such facilities, which has forced us to seek solutions, such as the ones we will discuss now, which are absurd.

For the State to take advantage of the poor tourist situation in the Canary Islands to, through subsidies to the Red Cross, it can hire tourist rooms or apartments as temporary residences for immigrants is, as we have said before, absurd, but also, ridiculous and unwise .

The decrease in the arrival of tourists as a result of the Covid-19 pandemic, and therefore, the economic deterioration of our hotel infrastructure, should not be used so that, as a last economic refuge, immigrants can settle there.

In recent weeks we have witnessed the controversy generated in the south of the island of Gran Canaria by this type of incident, which has been criticized "with a small mouth", for not being accused of racism, by mayors of several municipalities , businessmen and citizens.

The latest controversy in relation to this issue has jumped in Los Cristianos, in the south of the island of Tenerife.

Owners of the Granada Park complex were surprised last Thursday by the arrival of immigrants to their facilities. The Granada Park complex, although some owners reside regularly in it, is a facility with a tourist license.

The owners have complained about the fact that the company that operates the complex, Tenebrava, has made the decision to contract with the Red Cross the stay of immigrants in that tourist facility without having been consulted.

The advisor of the Community of Owners, Javier Cabrera, contacted this wording to try to give us an explanation of the facts that the owners denounced.

Mr. Cabrera, surprisingly, called the owners racist and even claimed that, taking into account the resort's tourist license, it was the owners who should not be residing in it.

Mr. Cabrera also equated the contract that has been put into effect with the Red Cross to any contract that could be signed with any tour operator, he cited the TUI, as if it were any tourist.

Mr. Cabrera went on to indicate that due to the complaints of the owners, they had been offered to leave the complex, as long as the immigrants were there, paying for their stays in hotels until they were diverted to other centers in the rest of the city. State.

Nonsense after nonsense.

What this conflict in Granada Park shows is the extraordinary improvisation of the Government Delegation in the accommodation of immigrants that, in addition, can serve as a call effect in Morocco, Mauritania or Senegal for accommodation in tourist establishments that are offered to women. people who arrive by way of boats or cayucos to the Canary Islands.

The deterioration that this fact may have in the international tourist markets has not yet been measured. We will see whether or not it will affect tourism when it recovers.

We understand the economic reasons that hotel companies may have and the crisis they are going through, we celebrate the dignified welcome of immigrants who arrive in boats and canoes to the islands, we congratulate ourselves for the solidarity that the islands have with the misfortune of the people who may be having a hard time in their countries of origin.

But this is one thing and another thing is to promote the absurd as it is being done:

We must give shelter to immigrants, yes.

You have to give them health care, yes.

It is necessary to provide them with decent living conditions, yes.

But all this does not mean that public facilities are not used for this purpose. Therefore, it is not racism, as the interested parties of the moment may argue. It is common sense.

And in our politicians, common sense seems to have disappeared.
